Installing A Shower Pan Yourself Right The First Time

Installing a shower pan is a scheme that a inexpensive handy person can do. It's a step by step policy that can be learned. There are some tricks, but once you know the basics you can do it right the first time.

A properly constructed shower pan should last for decades with very little maintenance. If you use the primary formula for constructing your shower you can have a beautiful tile shower institution made to fit your location and with just the tile designs you choose. It's a satisfying scheme and a way to save some money too. Plus you don't have strangers in your house! So let's look at the basic steps for installing your shower.

Shower Panel

The shower pan is two masonry layers plus a waterproof membrane with ceramic tile on top.

Start with a good solid subfloor. Some people put down hardibacker board as a base if it is convenient. Over the solid floor put a liner of roofing felt to comprise the mortar mix.

Rough set the drain so it is at the closed height of the shower floor. Allow for the base layers plus the tile thickness. The shower drain is made just for showers with two levels of drain holes. The top drain is the hole you see at the top. The lowest drain holes are below the face of the shower. That's a trick. Masonry, especially grout, is not waterproof. So the shower floor is not waterproof. Water soaks the masonry and goes down to a waterproof membrane that routes the water to these lower drain holes. Ok.

To build the first base layer, mix a cement mix made for showers. Check products in the tile section of your building supply store. Mix the mortar and pour it, then slope it to the lower base of the drain. Let it dry.

Now the real key to waterproofing the shower is the vinyl membrane. This special sheet is fitted into the shower over the first base coat and up the walls some inches. Fold the membrane in the corners and then cut a hole in the sheet for the drain. Glue the membrane to the top of the drain base. This forms the waterproof layer for the floor.

The next mortar layer is poured over this membrane and sloped to the drain. Before pouring the layer, put gravel over the lower drain holes to keep the lower drain open. Now let this layer dry.

Finally trowel on your thinset, lay the tile and then grout.

Let dry and your shower floor is ready. The floor is regularly sealed to the walls with caulk. And most people like to seal the grout in the floor with a quarterly grout sealer. Make sure to maintain the caulk seal from floor to wall and regularly reseal the grout.

Green energy - Make Your Own conveyable Solar Water Heater

You can make your own conveyable solar water heater for very itsybitsy money. Take it with you when you go camping, or place it in the garden to use for hand washing when you are outside. You will have free hot water wherever you are, as long as the sun shines.

What you need:

Shower Panel

You will need, a car or truck inner tube, these are available quite cheaply from a car parts store, or you can pick one up for free from a breakers yard. This is where your water is going to be stored, so the bigger it is the more hot water your heater will make. You will also need, a distance of garden hose, some rubber sealing compound, a hose pipe coupler to associate your hose to the water reservoir, and a nozzle to act as a tap, or a sprinkler if you want to use your hot water as a shower.

Building your heater:

Check your inner tube for leaks by partially inflating it, and then submerging it in water. Check for bubbles, if you see any rising it will show where the hole is. Fix any holes using a puncture Fix kit. Once your tube is airtight cut a hole in the tube opposite the valve. Make this hole just big enough to accept the end of your hose coupler. Insert the coupler into this hole, and cover with rubber solution to seal it in place. associate your hose, and nozzle to the coupler, and there you have it, your solar water heater is complete.

Filling your heater:

To fill your water heater you can use a funnel, and poor water down the hose. The other formula is, if you close the hose nozzle and inflate the tire. Then place the end of the hose into a body of water, maybe a lake if you are camping, or a rain water-butt if you are in the garden, and let the air out of the tire, it will suck up water as he air exits the tube.

Using your heater:

Once filled naturally leave it out in the sun to heat. Placing it on the roof, or hood of a car, or roof of a camper, will heat the quickest. If it is in the garden then placing it on a shed or outhouse roof is ideal. To use you can either hang over a tree branch, or raise it up some other way.

Storing your heater:

To store naturally empty the inner tube, and roll it up. It will genuinely ft in a backpack, or small case. Your heater can be set up and used in no time. You can now use your conveyable solar water heater anywhere you go. Enjoy your free hot water.

Shower Panel

Photovoltaic panels are a group of solar cells consisted of semiconductor substances like silicone. The silicone, when out in the open to sunlight, helps with the building of free electrons. These cells have a negative and positive film which in turn generates an galvanic field.

The cell draws in the photons from the sunlight where the electrons will become free and then the electronics move through the conductor wires and leave through the connecting wire. And there you have it! Solar power! sharp isn't it?

Did you know that solar power operates in two diverse ways? One is from the heat of the sun while the other is from solar thermal vigor (a kind of vigor where the sun is utilized to generate heat i.e. Warm water for showers).

However, when it comes to solar power to generate electricity, solar panels is the answer. Now, solar panels are made of silicone. And inside the silicone is exiguous particles (called electrons). When the sun hits those exiguous particles, they become operational. Then they flow through the wires as electricity. There are big batteries that regain electricity throughout the day to power the homes at night or on cloudy days.

One room in the house that commonly needs to be redone and decorated is the bathroom. For the most part, it's difficult to in fact change how a bathroom looks physically because the fixtures are in place. But with some further decor and color the look of the room will completely change.

The first step involves cleaning all the surfaces. At times the white aren't as white as they could be because of the humidity of the shower and dirt on surfaces. Give the room a good cleaning to brighten things up.

Shower Panel

If the room is a dark color, it needs to be changed to something lighter. If you can paint, pick a light and intelligent color for the small space to make it look larger and easier on the eyes. If you have dark tile along all the walls, select larger pictures that can cover up that part of the wall for a better look.

At times the color of the shower enclosure can be changed, but this isn't a cheap option. If you have a shower curtain, that is an easy way to change the color in the bathroom. If you have an enclosed shower, consider getting a large towel that can be hung over the top of the enclosure to give the room some color.

Tile floors can be completely replaced, but this is expensive. Bathroom rugs and toilet rugs are the cheap way of changing the look of the room without investing in new tile. This is a very easy way to change the look of the room without spending too much money.

How to install Shower Inserts

Installing shower inserts all depends on the size and type but most have general qualities that are similar so there are tips that can be used for all when installing. The first step would be to ensure that the wall on which you're fixing the product is a moisture unyielding surface. If the shower insert is being settled in a room that was not a bathroom previously then the wall would need to be coated with latex primer. But you may go ahead and strike for home to the next step if you are renovating an existing bathroom.

Secondly take measurements of the width, height and length of the shower and also the length above the shower insert for the shower head. If you pick to use the plumbing theory that already exists then make sure the insert you pick is compatible with it.

Shower Panel

Choose the insert itself. Most are made from materials like plastic, fiberglass and acrylic. The advantages of using both acrylic and plastic are that they are both easy to declare and are both cheap. The upside of fiberglass is that it takes time to wear due to its heaviness. Those of us who enjoy a bit of color splashed here and there will be happy to find out that these materials are available in an assortment of colors.

Use a pencil to mark on the insert where the plumbing fixtures will go. Next drill holes and make sure the fixture extends well beyond the insert once it is in place. Make a test run and try to fit the piece to see if everything falls into place. If not you'll need to make adjustments here and there. As always, measure twice and cut once.

Apply silicone caulk to the base of the left panel. A constructive adhesive of high quality needs to be used to hold the left panel in place. Place the left panel in position and slowly tug at it to allow the constructive adhesive to come to be tacky. Continue repeating this process for the rest of the panels. Add a bit of silicone caulking in between the seams and allow it to dry. Then trim the edges and allow it to cure as directed by the instructions on the package.

The best way to keep your shower inserts clean is by mixing some water with vinegar or lemon juice and using a piece of cloth to wipe it off.

Bathroom Heating - Hydronic Systems

This is a favorite type of heating law for many good reasons. Less drafty and generally quieter than forced-air systems, hydronic baseboard heat also has less of a tendency to dry out the air, and it is assuredly divided into cut off thermostatically controlled zones. But there are a combine of problems with baseboard heating in the bathroom. The first is the question of wall space for the convectors. Regularly space is at a superior in a bathroom, and enough lengths of baseboard convectors have to compete with the fixtures for room on the walls. Sometimes you'll find runs of baseboard convectors extending behind the toilet, which in my general feel is a mistake. That is a pretty moist environment, with splash over and condensation from the toilet, and it doesn't take long for the steel housings on the baseboards to start to corrode and rust.

Also, many fin-tube convectors are-to be brutally honest-pretty clunky looking. In a larger room they aren't as obtrusive, but in a small bathroom they are very noticeable. An alternative is to use a thin-profile baseboard like Runtal's, which is only 2 in. Deep and which varies in height from 3 in. To 12 in. Off the floor, depending on the heat output of the unit. With a heat output of about 900 Btu/hour per running foot for the 12-in.-high 4-tube unit, this baseboard is well remarkable for the slight free wall space of a bathroom. Someone else solution is to use a wall-mounted panel radiator; some of them can duplicate as a towel warmer.

Shower Panel

If there is a vanity in the bathroom, Someone else option is to mount a covenant fan-coil convector underneath, in the toekick space. These units tie into the existing hydronic system; they have a small electrically driven fan, which circulates air around a heating coil before blowing it out into the room. They put out plenty of heat, typically have an adjustable blower, and the warm air they exude feels good on the feet without being so hot that it might burn them.

In my experience, these fans can be pretty noisy, and they also require a working water climatic characteristic of about 140 degrees F to put out enough heat, so they don't work very well with lower climatic characteristic systems (like heat pumps). Someone else question is their lack of a filtration system. The fans pull in air along the toe kick, generally a very dusty place, and it doesn't take long for the fins on the blower to get clogged up with dust, cutting into the carrying out of the blower. And I haven't been very impressed with their longevity; replacing or servicing a unit mounted underneath a cabinet is not fun, even with an way panel cut into the lowest of the cabinet.

Hydronic systems are also well remarkable to providing radiant heat, an increasingly favorite way to warm a home. Instead of being routed through convectors, radiant hydronic systems send heated water through flexible plastic pipes buried in the floors, walls, or ceilings, turning these surfaces into heating elements. Though more expensive than regular convection hydronic heat, radiant systems offer indiscernible mechanical presence, quiet operation, and even and predictable heat.

Foam Shower Pan - 5 Tips

A foam shower pan sounds like a poor substitute for a mortar or cement base and honestly it may be. But the foam option honestly solves some problems with tile showers and many pros now use only foam. Here are some tips that get at the reasons why foam is great if it's the right product.

Slopes For Water Fall

Shower Panel

Shower floors just plainly leak. The grout lets water pass through and so do many types of tile. That means a tile shower base must be built in a way that the water gets caught and passed to a drain. One piece of the puzzle is the slope to the drain that encourages the water to all head to the drain instead of pooling somewhere. That slope is traditionally built with mortar by for years a foam base has been available to substitute for the mortar.

Not Just Any Foam

The foam shower base isn't just any foam. You may consideration cheap vinyl shower enclosure that use Styrofoam to withhold the floor of the shower. This type of building in no way equals what is required to withhold a tile ready installation. One of the associates that furnishes tile ready shower pans is Schluter. Their Kerdi pan is a lightweight vast polystyrene base that substitutes for a concrete sloped base. It is made to cope the weight of the tile and is part of a system.

The No Mold Option

The law eliminates one of the basic problems with tile showers. See the water that makes it through the floor face in a primary shower pan soaks through the base until it makes it to a built in waterproof liner. From the liner the water flows down to a special drain and then away. But all that water that soaks the pan can honestly be the living place for mold.

What the Schluter law does is put the waterproof liner on top of either a foam base or a masonry base. By putting the liner on top of the base and installing the tile right on the liner, there is no base to stay soaked and grow mold. This is a huge advantage.

The Drain clarification Too

Also a drain for a shower with a law like this has no need for a buried drain layer to catch water that makes it through the floor. The drain gets installed right on the base and right over the waterproof Kerdi membrane so all the water stays right up top and not soaking the base.

Mud Instead Of Foam

As suggested, not only will a foam base work with this system, so will a mortar base. But the distinction in this base and a primary shower pan is this base only is one layer. There is no need to build in a waterproof liner and no need to make two layers. The mortar here only serves as a sloping base for a layer of waterproofing material. It's simpler and very flexible for building practice shower sizes.

A foam shower base works to waterproof showers when combined with the right drain and the right waterproofing material. These showers go together faster and eliminate some built-in problems with a primary shower pan.

choosing the Right Bath Screen

If you're like me, you probably think shower curtains are a hassle. They are a pain to move around; they nothing else but get dirty and full of mildew; and if you don't use them right, you end up with water everywhere. If you're thinking there has to be a better way; you're right. A bath screen is a glass or plastic piece that fits onto the side of your shower and blocks the water just like a curtain would. The advantage is that they're much easier to use and keep clean. They also work better if you have a nothing else but strong shower spray.

There are some distinct types of bath screens, and it's important that you choose the right one. The first type is a full bath enclosure. This is similar to a typical sliding shower door; except it goes colse to your whole bathtub. They are nothing else but cleaned and block water from escaping better than a shower curtain. You should get this type of screen if you have flooring that can't get wet or a bathtub that is no enclosed by walls on three sides.

Shower Panel

If a big bulky frame isn't your thing, you should look at frameless over-bath screens. These screens are for baths that are surrounded on three sides. They cover the half of open side that the shower is on. They're more visually curious than traditional bath screens because they don't have big metal frames. The question I with these screens is that water can splash colse to the face or straight through spaces between the screen and the tub. These screens are best for bathrooms with tile or flooring that won't get water damaged. Frameless screens are ready fixed, or with a hinge so they can open and close.

The former types of screens ordinarily work best in larger bathrooms because they can take up a lot of space and seem too big in a small area. For smaller bathrooms, you should think a folding multi-panel screen. These can be pushed up and stored in a small area by your tub, or pulled out to cover the same space as a frameless screen. This way they only take up space when you're using them.

Hopefully you've learned a lot and are ready to go out and find the perfect screen to heighten your bathroom.
